Hours/Days: 8 hours per day, 5 days per week

Daily Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.(hours can change based on site needs)

Job Description

 

LOCKSMITH

 

JOB SUMMARY

 

Under the general supervision of the Director of Maintenance & Operations perform skilled locksmithing work in the installation, repair, adjustment and changing of keyed, electronic or wireless, and combination locks; repair; install and maintain door hardware; provide the safety and security of District facilities, equipment, students, staff and others; and perform other related work as may be required. 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Inspect, maintain and repair locks;

  • Dismantle and rebuild various types of locks and change lock combinations;

  • Repin lock cylinders, replace work tumblers springs and other parts;

  • Make duplicate copies of keys by key code and by hand; issue and maintain District-wide record of keys issued; create and maintain master key system to various schools and offices; enter related information into computer data base; 

  • Install and maintain wireless network components compatible with district’s wireless access control system; electronic door hardware, hardwire locks, wireless locks, standalone locks; 

  • Program electronic locking hardware, user credentials, user access levels, lockdown zones, and other functions within the selected software system;

  • Troubleshoot, repair, replace and maintain a variety of metal and wood doors, closers, panic bars, door holders, hinges and install latches and dead bolts and other security and emergency hardware;

  • Install, re-key and repair cabinet, lockers, padlocks and desk locks;

  • Install and repair student lockers; install new doors, latches slides, handles and other parts; update and maintain records of locker combinations and change combinations as necessary;

  • Fabricate metal and wood parts as needed; maintain, adapt and replace parts according to applicable building codes, laws and ordinances;

  • Operate and maintain a variety of related hand and power tools and equipment, including saws, breaks, shears, grinders, drill press, jointers, planers, routers, key cutting and coding and welding equipment;

  • Estimate amounts of materials and labor required for locksmithing jobs; requisition, order and store supplies and materials;

  • Perform a variety of general maintenance work and assist others with special projects as assigned; 

  • Repair and modify existing furniture, shelving, cabinetry, equipment and fixtures;

  • Cut, fit and hang doors; maintain and repair woodwork of buildings;

  • Oil and check locks;

  • Perform other related work as may be required. 

 

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

 

  • Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in locksmithing work; 

  • Various locks available and the best use for each type;

  • Methods, materials and equipment used in general door and window hardware;

  • District operational procedures;

  • Building codes, laws and standard practices related to locksmithing, including hardware and keying requirements;

  • Basic shop math;

  • Safety and security practices;

  • Electronic access control systems. 

 

Ability to:

 

  • Perform specialized locksmithing work;

  • Program selected electronic access control system;

  • Operate and maintain a variety of power equipment safely and skillfully;

  • Work with minimal supervision;

  • Perform repetitive asks & complex tasks; 

  • Demonstrate good problem-solving skills;

  • Respond appropriately to direction and changes in the work setting;

  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;

  • Duplicate keys and maintain comprehensive records issuance;

  • Operate District vehicle;

  • Effectively apply required knowledge to training scenarios and actual emergency incidents;

  •  Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with those contacted in the course of work;

  • Learn and utilize new and current technologies.

 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

 

Education: 

Equivalent to graduation from high school.

 

Experience: 

Three (3) years of skilled locksmithing experience is required. 

 

REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES

If driving a vehicle is required in the course of work, operator must possess a valid California Driver’s License and maintain possession of such license during the course of employment; have an acceptable driving record; and must be insurable at standard rates by the District’s insurance carrier and maintain such insurability. 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position must perform in carrying out the essential job duties and responsibilities listed above.

 

Physical Demands:

Reach (continuously); walk, sit and bend (frequently); stand, stoop, squat, kneel, climb, push, pull and twist (occasionally); lift up to 50 pounds alone, to 75 pounds with assistance (occasionally); over 100 pounds with assistance (infrequently); grasp & manipulate tools/equipment (frequently); use seeing, hearing and speaking.   

 

Working Conditions: 

School, office and grounds. Exposure to: inside/outside temperature swings; electrically or mechanically operated equipment, tool vibration, dust.
