Position Information:
Position Title: Skilled Maintenance Worker III - Plumber
Location: Maintenance & Operations Department
Work Year: 12 months
Hours/Days: 8 hours per day, 5 days per week
Daily Schedule: Monday - Friday (6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.)

SKILLED MAINTENANCE WORKER III - PLUMBER
JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision of Maintenance Supervisor, to lead and participate fully in a variety of skilled, journey level craft work in the maintenance, repair, construction, and upkeep of school buildings, facilities, and miscellaneous equipment; perform skilled trades work in plumbing, and to do related work as may be required for the Maintenance Department. Plan, organize, and coordinate plumbing activities.
This is a single position class to which an incumbent is assigned a working lead role over assigned workers, and must be skilled and able to assist in the training of assigned workers. While a major portion of the time of a position in this class is spent in performing skilled plumbing, however, an incumbent is also expected to carry out a wide range of other assigned maintenance work outside of plumbing. When licenses are required, an incumbent must be able to pass any necessary examinations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Schedules work in cooperation with other maintenance sections and personnel

Distributes work assignments to assigned personnel

Inspects work in progress and upon completion and sees that work is performed in compliance with instructions and meets appropriate quality standards

Trains, grades, checks, evaluates, and corrects the work of assigned workers
-
Makes installations of general plumbing systems and repairs existing systems
-
Installs, repairs and maintains flush valves, water valves, sewer lines, sprinkler valves, storm drains, water lines and gas lines

Does welding, soldering, caulking, brazing
-
Cuts threads and sets pipes
-
Repairs, installs and maintains hot water heaters, and other equipment
-
Installs sewer mains and makes repairs or replaces valves, gaskets, tubing and pipes

Cuts, binds, fuses and joins tubing and pipes
-
Tests systems by pressure tests; tests joints and insulates pipes
-
Installs water piping, sewer mains and laterals
-
Repairs and replaces pipes, valves, fittings, ball-cocks and other fixtures
-
Cuts and threads pipe; packs faucets
-
Repairs water supply, waste, sewage and drainage pipes
-
Wipes and flushes joints, cleans out drains and removes obstructions from water and sewer systems

Installs washers, dryers, water heaters and garbage disposals and steam kettles
-
Works from verbal instructions, blueprints, sketches, and work orders

Requisitions needed supplies

Cares for plumbing tools and equipment

Assists in other skilled or semi-skilled maintenance areas if needed.

Keeps time, labor and materials records

Maintains gas, oil and water in assigned vehicles

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE OF:

Tools, materials, and standard practices of the plumbing trade

ABILITY TO:

Perform highly skilled plumbing installation, repair and maintenance work

Lead a maintenance crew in all phases of assigned work

Perform and learn to perform a wide range of general maintenance and repair work not requiring journeyman skill

Use plumbing tools and equipment skillfully

Plan and lay out plumbing work including estimating labor and material cost

Work from sketches, diagrams, blueprints, plans and specifications

Perform shop math

Understand and carry out oral and written instructions

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education:
Graduation from High School or general education degree (GED)
Experience:
Three (3) years of journeyman level plumbing experience (including commercial installation) or two (2) years of experience as a skilled plumber in the Hemet Unified School District or in an area in which the incumbent has acquired competence at a skilled level in this trade.
REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES

Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver’s License
-
May be required to hold certificates of competence to test various equipment and devices when required by the Riverside County Health Officer.
