Position Title:  Custodial Supervisor 

Location: Maintenance & Operations Department 

Work Year: 12 months

Hours/Days: 8 hours per day, 5 days per week

Daily Schedule: Monday - Friday (3:00 p.m. - 11:30 p.m.)

Job Description

CUSTODIAL SUPERVISOR

 JOB SUMMARY 

Under the direction of the Assistant Director, Maintenance & Operations, to plan, coordinate, and supervise the cleaning of all District facilities; coordinate the custodial aspects of evening use of District facilities by the community; work in conjunction with all site administrators to establish, implement and monitor cleaning standards, frequency of tasks, levels of service and staffing, to ensure all District facilities are meeting those levels.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Confer with various school and District personnel relative to the maintenance, care, and cleaning of school facilities, the assignment of personnel, and the preparation of activity schedules and calendars;

  2. Review and inspect school facilities to ensure against safety hazards, and to ensure that a standard of cleanliness is maintained;

  3. Arrange for, train, and instruct substitute personnel in the performance of cleaning and facility  maintenance functions;

  4. May test custodial supplies and equipment, and make recommendations for acquisition;

  5. Assist in the planning, development, and implementation of orientation and training programs for custodial personnel;

  6. Review and approve custodial supply and equipment requisitions;

  7. Plan, schedule, and coordinate the long-range facility maintenance and cleaning programs;

  8. Assist with evaluative reports of custodial personnel, and may provide technical input relative to the employee performance evaluation process;

  9. Serve as a liaison to community groups using District facilities;

  10. Evaluate custodial staff performance by collaborating with site personnel;

  11. Facilitate lead custodial or other meetings;  

  12. Keeps a variety of operational and personnel records;  

  13. Participate in the selection of staff;

  14. Prepares written reports;  

  15. Advises employees of safe work practices and procedures; 

  16. Assure compliance with all applicable safety codes and regulations; 

  17. Inspects buildings and grounds for health and safety hazards or vandalism;

  18. May work variable hours such as nights, weekends, events, and emergencies, based on department need;

  19. Performs other related work duties as assigned.

 

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

 KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

 

Knowledge of:

  1. Methods, materials, and equipment utilized in a comprehensive cleaning and building maintenance operation;

  2. Principles of administration, supervision, management, training, safety, and security;

  3. Principles of budgeting, cost analysis, and reporting;

  4. Methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial work;

  5. Cleaning product applications and general safe applications of all related chemical products used in the course of the daily duties of custodial personnel;

  6. Requirements for maintaining school facilities in a safe, clean, and sanitary condition;

  7. Safe working methods and procedures.

 

Ability to:

  1. Accurately estimate time and materials required in the conduct of a comprehensive custodial operation;

  2. Read and interpret building blueprints, working drawings, sketches, product labels, and material safety data sheets;

  3. Plan, organize, coordinate, supervise, inspect, and evaluate the work performed by custodial personnel; 

  4. Maintain a variety of files and records, and prepare and present clear and concise reports;

  5. Write and speak clearly and concisely;

  6. Make effective written and oral reports;

  7. Understand and carry out oral and written directions;

  8. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships

  9. Follow safety procedures and written and verbal instructions; 

  10. Work cooperatively with staff, students, contractors, and the public; 

  11. Make independent decisions; 

  12. Work autonomously; 

  13. Demonstrate good problem-solving skills; 

  14. Organize tasks, set priorities, and meet deadlines; 

  15. Manage multiple tasks; 

  16. Direct, supervise, and instruct others; 

  17. Respond appropriately to evaluation and changes to the work setting.

 

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

 

Education: High School Diploma, General Education Degree (GED), or Certificate of Proficiency, supplemented by coursework or training in organization and supervision, custodial operational methods and procedures, or other related areas.

 

Experience: Four years of experience in school custodial work, including one year in a lead or supervisory capacity.

 

REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES

  1. Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License and maintain possession of such license during the course of employment; 

  2. Have an acceptable driving record; 

  3. Must be insurable at standard rates by the District's insurance carrier and maintain such insurability during the course of employment.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS 

The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.

 

Physical Demands: Walk (continuously); bend, stoop, reach, push & pull (frequently) to access areas and to operate equipment; lift, up to 25 pounds (frequently), and up to 50 pounds (infrequently); grasp and manipulate tools/ equipment (frequently); use seeing, hearing, and speaking.

 

Working Conditions: Most work is performed indoors, some outdoors.  Exposure to: electrically and mechanically operated equipment; cleaning agent odors; floor buffer vibration; seasonal outdoor temperatures (30o -120o) and possible exposure to dust, wind, sun, and insects. May work alone.
