Position Title: AVID Tutor (2025-2026 School Year)

Location: District Wide 

Hours/Days: On Call; As Needed (Work hours will vary and are based on district needs).

Job Description

AVID TUTOR 

 

JOB SUMMARY 

Under the direct supervision of the AVID Coordinator, AVID tutors serve as positive role models for AVID students, supporting their academic growth and personal development. Tutors share insights into college and career pathways while fostering student agency and a growth mindset. Trained in the AVID Tutorial Process, tutors facilitate collaborative tutorial sessions that promote WICOR strategies (writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading), guiding students in developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for academic success.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Become familiar with the materials in the AVID library; become familiar with the textbooks and materials used by AVID students;

  2. Conduct tutorial sessions that underscore the principle of collaborative learning and the practice of students teaching other students through discussion of class and text notes;

  3. Determine from student notes and discussions the concepts that need to be taught or re-taught;

  4. Evaluate student binders, including calendars, class and text notes, book notes, etc.;

  5. Contact teachers regarding course outlines and assignment schedules as directed by the AVID coordinator;

  6. Assist in developing a resource file of enrichment materials for use in tutorial sessions;

  7. Communicate frequently and honestly with the AVID coordinator regarding student progress and areas of concern;

  8. Support AVID Program with field trips, school events, etc. related to college and career readiness;

  9. Assess and score student binders and tutorial work, providing constructive feedback to support academic growth and improvement;

  10. Perform other related work as may be required.

 

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

 

Knowledge of:

  1. Basic methods and techniques used in tutoring and ways to work effectively with students;

  2. General needs and behavior patterns of students at the level to which assigned; 

  3. Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; 

  4. Basic arithmetic.

 

Ability to:

  1. Project a mature, constructive, and stable attitude in a learning environment; 

  2. Be an excellent role model of a motivated, organized, successful college student who believes the AVID students will succeed;

  3. Be able to work in a supportive manner with secondary students and to understand the delicate position occupied as an AVID tutor.

 

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

Education: High School Diploma, General Education Degree (GED), or Certificate of Proficiency and possession of the knowledge and abilities listed above. Currently enrolled in college or university.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS 

The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out the essential job functions.

 

Physical Demands: Manual dexterity to operate business related equipment and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job; Sit, look down, turn neck (frequently); Walk, stand, bend, stoop, reach, twist (occasionally); squat, kneel, push, pull, climb stairs (infrequently); Lift & carry items to 10 pounds (occasionally), to 25 pounds (infrequently); grasp/ manipulate materials and supplies (frequently); use vision, hearing & speaking (continuously).

 

Working Conditions: Indoor classrooms, outdoor schoolyard & grounds. Exposure to: student & playground noise, seasonal temperatures, dust, and wind.
