Learning Improvement Site Support Specialist 


Job Summary:
Hemet USD is committed to building continuous improvement capability throughout the district in order to effectively and reliably meet the needs of all students it serves. Building improvement capability at this scale requires the development of a learning environment that allows for (1) close collaboration between district and site-based staff who are closest to the work of educating students (2) ongoing learning and application of improvement methodologies on problems that occur in the day-to-day work at the district and sites (3) iterative design and testing cycles of changes to improve district-wide outcomes.

Under the direction of an assigned director in Educational Services, the Learning Improvement Site Support Specialist plays an integral role in collaborating with district leaders and site-based staff to understand systemic problems that impact the ability to understand and meet student and caregiver needs. 

The goal of the Learning Improvement Site Support Specialist is to build teacher capacity and their understanding of instructional best practices to positively impact student outcomes using adult learning theory and improvement science tools and strategies.  A Learning Improvement Site Support Specialist is a learner who models continuous improvement, lifelong learning and goes above and beyond to ensure student success.  The focus is on continuous improvement in classrooms; utilization of data to integrate short cycles of improvement to meet the overall goal(s); and establishing effective rapport with teachers, students, and administrators.  The Learning Improvement Site Support Specialist works collaboratively with the district and school leadership teams to ensure alignment of the district’s vision, mission, and values.  The learning improvement specialist will promote reflection, provide guidance and structure where needed, and focus on strengths, collaboration, and common issues of concern.  The learning improvement site support specialist supports high-quality instruction in classrooms through modeling, co-planning, team teaching, and may provide feedback to teachers with a specific focus on the use of improvement science methodologies.  Additionally, support curriculum development and school/district-related projects.  This is not a supervisory position and does not include evaluation of colleagues.  This position is District-based to allow for proper coordination and targeted supports at sites. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Coordinates and/or provides training and coaching to school staff in instructional best practices including but not limited to principles of Improvement Science.
  • Supports the instructional development of all teachers in understanding improvement science practices supported with state standards, district curriculum/pacing guide/assessments, district instructional framework, goals, PDSA cycles, student data driving instruction, purpose statements, and the continuous improvement rubric.
  • Provides direction and coordination for curriculum implementation consistent with the district’s foundational principles and recognized best instructional practices.
  • Support curriculum development and school/district-related projects.
  • Develops, guides, and creates other support material as necessary.
  • Design and deliver professional development for site and district-level needs based on data and site/district goals. 
  • Provide regular instruction and intervention to students in accordance with their teaching credential. 
  • Assigned to and supports the Educational Services team as a valuable member.  
  • Demonstrates initiative and an ability to follow through on projects.
  • Provides resources and assistance for all staff regarding instructional best practices, continuous improvement strategies, and technology integration with a specific focus on improvement methodologies. 
  • Supports teachers and administrators in using data to improve instruction on all levels.
  • Available for coaching cycles (i.e. informal observations which are non-evaluative, co-planning, team teaching, and modeling lessons) for the purpose of enriching and enhancing a teacher’s professional growth and student success.
  • Utilizes adult learning theory to motivate adult learners to improve professional practice.
  • Exhibits strong pedagogical knowledge, including differentiation strategies to meet the needs of all learners.
  • Exhibits strong improvement science knowledge.
  • Demonstrates expertise in oral and written communication.
  • Models continual improvement, demonstrates lifelong learning, and applies new learning to help all students achieve.
  • Assists teachers with instructional planning to achieve curriculum objectives and establish a positive classroom environment.
  • May provide relevant information from research and professional literature on best practices in instruction
  • Collaborates with Directors and Coordinators in Educational Services in the evaluation of program effectiveness through data collection and data analysis.
  • Collaborate with teacher teams to investigate the ways in which the design of the system produces the current outcomes and support instructional decision-making aligned with standards and research-based strategies
  • Learn to investigate the system through the application of improvement methodologies
  • Communicate learnings with relevant site-based staff to ensure transparency, development of trust, and communication
  • Attend meetings, trainings, and professional learning as directed by the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, or designee
  • Adheres to the standards and policies of the District.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by administrators.

  • This is an itinerant position and Learning Improvement Specialists will be subject to occasional district-wide travel, and occasional prolonged and irregular hours
  • Serve for a term of up to five years with rights back to a teaching position in the district thereafter according to their credential

 

EDUCATION:
Possession of a Baccalaureate or higher degree. Master’s degree preferred.

 

CREDENTIAL:
Clear California Teaching credential.  CLAD, BCLAD, SDAIE certification is required.

 

EXPERIENCE/OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Five years of classroom teaching experience.
  • Evidence of experience in assisting and enhancing the professional growth of colleagues
  • Experience as a resource, mentor, or lead teacher
  • Willingness to continue to seek professional development


PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position must perform in carrying out the essential functions of the position.

Physical Demands: Sit, stand, reach, look down, turn neck (frequently); walk, bend, stoop, squat, push, pull, climb stairs, reach above shoulders (occasionally); kneel, crawl, lay down, use foot controls (infrequently); lift/carry items to 10 pounds (frequently), to 25 pounds (occasionally) and 26 – 90 pounds (students, in emergencies); grasp/manipulate materials and supplies (frequently); use seeing, hearing and speaking (continuously).

Working Conditions:  Indoor classrooms, outdoor school yard and grounds.  Exposure to: student and playground noise, communicable diseases, unruly students, air conditioning, seasonal temperatures, dust, wind, pesticides and possible smog.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Elementary Specialists will teach during Walk to Learn
  • Secondary Specialists will teach two sections/6th-period assignment
  • TK-8 Specialists will teach during Walk to Learn and one (1) section, i.e. Study Skills class
