PHYSICAL THERAPY ASSISTANT
JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Executive Director of Special Education or designee, the Physical Therapy Assistant supports Physical Therapists in providing educationally related physical therapy services to students with various disabilities according to the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan. The Physical Therapy Assistant works closely with Physical Therapists to promote and maintain student health by assisting with the implementation of physical therapy services in accordance with the designated physical therapy program.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Counsel students and their families on what to do following treatment;
2. Observe students before, during, and after therapy and report notes to the Physical Therapist;
3. Assign specific exercises to the student and help the student do these exercises;
4. Use devices and other equipment to help students regain movement and reduce pain;
5. Use a variety of techniques, including stretching exercises and massage, to treat students;
6. Assist students when moving to and from the therapy area;
7. Contribute to a physical therapist’s effectiveness by identifying student care issues;
8. Administer treatment programs for students;
9. Assess student health by interviewing students, performing physical examinations, and obtaining updating, and studying therapy histories;
10. Evaluate abnormal conditions by reviewing physical therapist’s interpretations of student
evaluations and test results;
11. Document student care services by charting in student and department records;
12. Perform therapeutic procedures by administering manual exercises and instructing, encouraging, and assisting students in performing physical activities, such as non-manual exercises, ambulatory functional activities, and daily living activities;
13. Assist students in using supportive devices, such as crutches, canes, and prostheses;
14. Instruct and counsel students by describing therapeutic regimens, giving normal growth and development information, and promoting wellness and health maintenance;
15. Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and
regulations and adhering to infection-control policies and protocols;
16. Maintain production objectives by noting current treatment trends and monitoring actual physical therapy services rendered to production objectives;
17. Maintain legal and accreditation compliance by adhering to policy positions concerning federal, state, and local regulations and standards;
18. Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities;
19. Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDSKNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

3. Theory of physical and mental rehabilitation underlying practices for physical therapy;
4. Assessment tools;
5. Treatment approaches and adaptive equipment;
6. Understanding of state and federal regulations, guidelines, and timelines.
ABILITY TO:1. Use a variety of methods, techniques, and practices in physical therapy;
2. Properly use and core for the materials, supplies, and equipment employed in performing
services as a physical therapy assistant;
3. Instruct students in physical therapy exercises;
4. Respond appropriately to evaluation and changes in the work setting;
5. Work effectively with District personnel, community representatives, interdisciplinary teams, and students;
6. Access and use District-adopted web-based systems.
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCEEducation: High School Diploma, General Education Degree (GED), or Certificate of Proficiency and possession of the knowledge and abilities listed above. Possession of an AA degree or higher for physical therapy assistant or equivalent.
Experience: One year of experience working with children in a physical therapy or educational setting.
REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES1. Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License and maintain possession of such license during employment;
2. Have an acceptable driving record;
3. Must be insurable at standard rates by the District's insurance carrier and maintain such
insurability during employment;
4. Must provide current licensure and must maintain licensure during employment by the Physical Therapy Board of California;
5. Valid first aid and CPR certification and meeting requirements to keep certificates current.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONSThe physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position must perform in carrying out the essential functions listed above.
Physical Demands: Walk, look downward, turn neck (up to continuously); sit, bend (frequently); stand, stoop, squat, reach, push, pull (frequently); kneel, crawl, climb, foot controls (infrequently); grasp/manipulate materials & supplies (continuously); lift/carry up to 10 pounds (frequently), lift/carry to 40 pounds (infrequently), use vision, hearing & speaking (continuous, in class).
Working Conditions: Indoor office or classroom, exposure to student noise and music, odors of food and possible communicable diseases, constant interruptions. Outdoor school yard and grounds, exposure to high and low temperatures, dust, and wind.
