Job Description

Elementary Band Teacher

 

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

Under direction,  to organize and implement quality, inspiring and engaging instrumental lessons for elementary students in grades 4 and 5. Collaborating with other music teachers to plan performances and recruitment, developing Band programs and demonstrating proficiency in required instruments are core elements.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

Teaching and Learning:

  • Establish a schedule for each class or classes in consultation with teachers and site administrators; arrange for lesson and rehearsal space use
  • Connect curricular content to the California Arts Standards
  • Collaborate with district and site staff to provide multiple performance opportunities for students to showcase their talents and passions for their peers and parents
  • Develop clear classroom, behavior and performance etiquette expectations
  • Select and order appropriate music and necessary equipment
  • Provide quality, rigorous instruction; aligning authentic assessment tasks
  • Select, edit, and arrange age-appropriate repertoire and exercises to accommodate the musical ability of pupils
  • Implement high quality learning and teaching strategies to inspire best practice
  • Meet with other District music teachers in planning for any possible District music programs
  • Give instruction in the fundamentals of music; give individual or small group lessons to students enrolled in the band program
  • Counsel with student and parents concerning the band program and selection of instruments for pupils
  • Maintain an inventory of, and be responsible for and keep in good repair the District music instruments and equipment assigned to their custody
  • General Music instruction may be required and experience in General Music is desirable

  • Maintain an organized, clean environment Professional Responsibilities:
  • Participate in staff meetings and committees, as assigned
  • Actively participate in Professional Learning Communities to improve teaching and learning
  • Reflect on instruction and goal setting with assigned Coach/Mentor
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service training provided by the District and/or through self-selected professional development activities
  • Complete all District requests including but not limited to inventory, reporting, communicating with parents and staff and completing contractual obligations

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Music, Music Performance, or Music Education preferred

Credential:

  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid California credential authorizing services in Music.

The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position must perform in carrying out the essential functions of the position.

Physical Demands:

Sit, stand, reach, look down, turn neck (frequently); walk, bend, stoop, squat, push, pull, climb stairs, reach above shoulders (occasionally); kneel, crawl, lay down, use foot controls (infrequently); lift/carry items to 10 pounds (frequently), to 25 pounds (occasionally) and 26 – 90 pounds (students, in emergencies); grasp/manipulate materials and supplies (frequently); use seeing, hearing and speaking (continuously).

Working Conditions:

Indoor classrooms, outdoor school yard and grounds. Exposure to: student and playground noise, communicable diseases, unruly students, air conditioning, seasonal temperatures, dust, wind, pesticides and possible smog.
