SECONDARY CHOIR/VOCAL MUSIC TEACHER
Job Description
Under the direction of the Site Administration, to organize and implement quality, inspiring, and engaging choir lessons for secondary school students. Collaborating with other music teachers to plan performances and recruitment, developing Choir programs, and delivering a well-rounded, standards-based curriculum are core elements.
Examples of Duties
- Develop a culture of care in which students connect music to their lives and the greater community
- Utilize the California Arts Standards for Music and Ensembles in planning, assessing, and reporting
- Maintain a minimum of two choir ensembles at each assigned site
- Actively recruit on site and with other feeder divisions to promote the arts in the District, to increase student participation and retention
- Choose appropriate repertoire to reflect a variety of genres, time periods, and styles
- Collaborate with district and site staff to provide multiple performance opportunities for students to showcase their talents and passions for their peers and parents
- Collaborate in planning, preparation, and participation for appropriate District Music Festivals and Music Department meetings
- Participate in VAPA professional development opportunities
- Develop clear classroom management, behavior expectations, and performance etiquette expectations
- Provide quality, rigorous instruction, aligning authentic assessment tasks to objectives
- Implement high quality learning and teaching strategies to inspire best practice
- Classroom Culture:
- Creates a safe and productive classroom culture that fosters student responsibility for self and music equipment
- Positive relationships are evident, procedures are clear, and the classroom is safe and secure for learning
- Student and teacher interactions promote a growth mindset and student talents are cultivated
- All students are welcome and receive an equitable learning opportunity
- Maintains an organized, clean environment
- Professional Responsibilities:
- Participates in staff meetings and committees, as assigned
- Actively participates in Professional Learning Communities to improve teaching and learning
- Reflects on instruction and goal setting with assigned Coach/Mentor
- Maintains professional competence through in-service training provided by the District and/or through self- selected professional development activities
- Completes all District requests including but not limited to inventory, reporting, communicating with parents and staff and completing contractual obligations

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education: Possession of a baccalaureate or higher degree with emphasis in an academic major or minor subject matter fields with the needed courses to meet credential requirements.
Credential(s): Possession of a valid California Single Subject Music Teaching Credential, or Music Supplement, with an English Learner Authorization
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position must perform in carrying out the essential functions of the position.
Physical Demands: Sit, stand, reach, look down, turn neck (frequently); walk, bend, stoop, squat, push, pull, climb stairs, reach above shoulders (occasionally); kneel, crawl, lay down, use foot controls (infrequently); lift/carry items to 10 pounds (frequently), to 25 pounds (occasionally) and 26 – 90 pounds (students, in emergencies); grasp/manipulate materials and supplies (frequently); use seeing, hearing and speaking (continuously).
Working Conditions: Indoor classrooms, outdoor school yard and grounds. Exposure to: student and playground noise, communicable diseases, unruly students, air conditioning, seasonal temperatures, dust, wind, pesticides and possible smog.
