Job Description

LEAD BUS DRIVER

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision by the Transportation Director or designee, serves as a Bus Driver, assists new and experienced Bus Drivers in providing bus transportation, assists routing, safety training, field trip planning, and other work related duties as required. 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists with routing, safety training and field trip planning;
  • Assists with training and drills for students;
  • Stays familiar with District related needs regarding drivers;
  • Serves as a Bus Driver;
  • Collaborates with Bus Drivers in the performance of their duties and is solution-oriented;
  • Reviews driver knowledge and performance;
  • May participate in interview of new driver applicants;
  • Assists in scheduling Bus Drivers for student transportation on regular or special routes and training trips;
  • May assist in writing bus routes and practice driving bus routes;
  • Studies accident reports;
  • Supports drivers in taking corrective measures;
  • Maintains records and prepares reports;
  • Facilitates new concepts and practices;
  • Communicates accurately and consistently with supervisor and other bus drivers;
  • Operates a two-way radio communicating with Bus Drivers;
  • May cover activity trips, special events, and/or regular runs from time-to-time as necessary;
  • May perform other related work as may be required.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • California Motor Vehicle Code, Education Code applicable to the transportation of students;
  • The geography of the district, including schools and facility locations;
  • Safe driving practices and procedures.

ABILITY TO

  • Drive a school bus and other transportation equipment safely and efficiently;
  • Respond appropriately to directions and changes in work assignments;
  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measures, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals;
  • Perform simple record keeping and clerical duties;
  • Write reports and correspondence;
  • Work with minimal supervision;
  • Perform repetitive tasks and manage multiple tasks;
  • Make independent decisions;
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions;
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and those contacted in the course of work;
  • Access and use District-adopted web-based systems 

EDUCATION

High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and possession of the knowledge and abilities listed above.

EXPERIENCE

Three (3) years of successful driving experience with a demonstrated record of safe driving.

REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES

  • Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License Class A or B with "Air Brake" and "Passenger" endorsements;
  • Have an acceptable driving record and qualify for insurability by the District's authorized insurance carrier;
  • Possession of a California School Bus Driver Certificate with no restrictions except "Automatic Transmission Only" is acceptable;
  • Possession of a Medical Examiner's Certificate.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

The physical demands and working conditions requirements indicated below are examples of the demands that must be performed in carrying out the essential job functions.

Physical Demands: Sitting to drive, reaching, bending at the waist, kneel or crouch to inspect buses (up to continuously); stand, walk, bend, stoop, push, pull, twist neck and trunk (occasionally); lift/carry up to 50 pounds, including equipment and small children (occasionally); grasp and manipulate objects and steering wheel (up to continuously); use vision, hearing and speaking.

Working Conditions: Work outdoors and indoors, including bus; exposure to seasonal outdoor temperatures 38-110º, dust, wind, and sun, traffic and fuel odors, graffiti removal solvent and proximity to moving machinery (occasionally); vibration (up to continuously).
