VEHICLE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC III
JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision by the Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor, to perform skilled, journey-level work in the diagnosis, overhaul, and repair of diesel and gasoline powered engines and other vehicle components; may act as a working lead person; and to do other related work as may be required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
-
Receive and write up description of vehicle malfunction;
-
Inspect and diagnose mechanical defects, on a variety of gasoline and diesel powered buses, trucks, automobiles and other motorized equipment;
-
Maintain, serve, rebuild, replace, or overhaul engines, transmissions, differentials, starters, generators, water and fuel pumps, air conditioning systems, braking systems, clutches, carburetor systems, emission and exhaust systems, electrical systems, and other mechanical assemblies;
-
May use electric and gas welding equipment, cutting torch and shaping tools;
-
May construct or manufacture parts;
-
Use a variety of hand tools, diagnostic equipment, and a variety of mechanical aids in the repair, adjustment and maintenance of motorized equipment;
-
Maintain vehicle maintenance history file;
-
Read, interpret and follow schematic drawings and diagrams;
-
Monitor safety and emission equipment and maintain standards set by state;
-
Observe health and safety precautions;
-
Keep labor and material records and completion times;
-
May road test equipment to ensure that malfunctions have been corrected;
-
Respond to emergency roadside service needs.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE OF

Principles and theories of gasoline and diesel powered engines;

Principles, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of a variety of heavy duty gasoline and diesel powered motorized vehicles and equipment;

Operation and use of diagnostic equipment;

Legal mandates, policies, regulations and guidelines pertaining to the repair, overhaul and maintenance of student transportation and automotive equipment;

Safe work practices.
ABILITY TO

Perform skilled and specialized journey level gasoline and diesel powered motorized equipment repair, overhaul and maintenance functions;

Maintain records and files, and be able to prepare complete and concise reports;

Drive school buses and other District equipment safely;

Diagnose and locate mechanical and electrical malfunctions and defects;
-
Estimate time and materials, use parts catalog and order parts and supplies correctly;
-
Interpret mechanical, electrical and other schematics and diagrams;
-
Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals;
-
Work with minimal supervision;
-
Maintain established pace;
-
Perform repetitive tasks and complex tasks;
-
Respond appropriately to direction and changes;
-
Write routine reports and correspondence;
-
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measures, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals;

Keep abreast of new trends and developments in the automotive and power equipment trade;

Understand and follow oral and written directions;
-
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
EDUCATION
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and possession of the knowledge and abilities listed above.
EXPERIENCE
Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in the repair and overhaul of gasoline and diesel powered equipment of which One (1) year must have been as a journeyman mechanic.
REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES
Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License; have an acceptable driving record and qualify for insurability by the District's insurance carrier.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position must perform in carrying out the essential functions listed above.
Physical Demands:Walk, stand, stoop, squat, kneel, bend, climb, reach (continuously); push, pull and twist (occasionally); lift up to 25 pounds alone, to 100 pounds with assistance (occasionally); grasp and manipulate tools/equipment (continuously); use seeing, hearing and speaking.
Working Conditions: Most work performed indoors, some outdoors. Exposure to: electrically and mechanically operated equipment; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme heat (Non-weather); vibration; outdoor weather conditions; loud noise (example; bus engines) and possible exposure to dust, wind, and sun.
