PRESCHOOL TEACHER
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
Under the supervision of the Preschool Principal and Preschool Education Coordinator, the Preschool Teacher will provide a developmentally appropriate preschool program that is comprehensive in nature; will support and nurture the positive growth of children and their families.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Provide a developmentally appropriate learning environment that recognizes and supports the individual strengths and needs of children.
- Establish and maintain a physically and emotionally safe indoor and outdoor environment that nurtures the natural, individual development of the whole child.
- Provide a learning environment that is inclusive of children with special needs and that respects gender, culture, language, ethnicity, and family composition.
- Encourage and facilitate play and problem-solving among children.
- Plan and provide a balanced daily program of child-initiated and adult-initiated activities.
- Utilize developmental information from observations and knowledge of children’s interests in planning.
- Maintain awareness of health and safety of children, administer first aid as necessary.
- Assists children in developing self-help skills.
- Establish and maintain positive communication with families.
- Maintain a developmental profile for each child that is based on written observations and work samplings.
- Conduct two parent/teacher conferences for each child.
- Provide resource information and referrals to community agencies as needed by families.
- Respect the confidential nature of child and family records and program reports.
- Plan and coordinate the work of instructional aides or volunteers.
- Maintain positive work relationships with coworkers.
- Participate in community assessment and program evaluation.
- Attend site staff meetings and all-staff meetings.
- Actively seek activities toward professional growth and other related teaching duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Credential:
- A baccalaureate or advanced degree in early childhood education or a baccalaureate or advanced degree and coursework equivalent to a major relating to early childhood education, with experience teaching preschool-age children AND
- A valid teacher, master teacher, site supervisor, or program director permit issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing
Medical Requirement:
- Staff member must have an initial health examination that includes screening for tuberculosis and a periodic re-examination. Present evidence of Immunization against influenza, pertussis and measles. The results of any medical examinations shall not bar employment unless any disability cannot be reasonably accommodated as provided by state and federal law.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
- The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position must perform in carrying out the essential functions of the position.
Physical Demands:
- Sit, stand, reach, look down, turn neck (frequently); walk, bend, stoop, squat, push, pull, climb stairs, reach above shoulders (occasionally); kneel, crawl, lay down, use foot controls (infrequently); lift/carry items to 10 pounds (frequently), to 25 pounds (occasionally) and 26 – 90 pounds (students, in emergencies); grasp/manipulate materials and supplies (frequently); use seeing, hearing and speaking (continuously).
Working Conditions:
- Indoor classrooms, outdoor schoolyard and grounds. Exposure to: student and playground noise, communicable diseases, unruly students, air conditioning, seasonal temperatures, dust, wind, pesticides and possible smog.
