SUBSTITUTE CUSTODIAN/GROUNDSKEEPER
JOB SUMMARY
Under supervision, serve as a custodian or groundskeeper to maintain a safe and sanitary environment of school facilities and assist with the same on grounds surrounding assigned facilities; perform varied groundskeeping and gardening tasks.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Follow an assigned cleaning schedule;
-
Sweep, mop, strip, seal, wax, and polish floors; Vacuum and shampoo rugs and carpets;
-
Dust, polish, and wash classroom, and furniture; Clean desks, chalkboards, trays, and other classroom instructional equipment; Dust and clean metal work, light fixtures, and hardware;
-
Clean restrooms, including doors, mirrors, sinks, walls, floors, toilets and hardware;
-
Clean and fill dispensers and receptacles as needed;
-
Move, arrange, and set up furniture and equipment to prepare classrooms, auditoriums, or other activity areas for special events, activities, or meetings;
-
Clean and make repairs to custodial and maintenance equipment assigned to the school or facility;
-
Empty and clean waste receptacles, including trash barrels;
-
Vacuum sweep (or use a leaf blower) and pick up trash on walkways, concrete, and blacktop surfaces immediately adjacent to the school buildings;
-
Unclog drains, toilets, and urinals;
-
Open up or lock and secure windows, doors, and gates;
-
Inspect buildings and grounds for broken equipment and vandalism and report unsafe conditions, needed repairs and maintenance;
-
Assists co-workers for the purpose of providing support in the performance of their work assignments;
-
Deliver supplies as required for the purpose of distributing items to appropriate personnel;
-
Inform designed personnel of needed supplies to ensure the availability of items needed to properly perform the job;
-
Mow lawns and fields; Edge around walks, plant beds, fences, and related grounds areas;
-
Trim and prune shrubs, hedges, and trees; Prepare, cultivate, and fertilize bedding and lawn areas;
-
Plant trees, shrubs, flowers and grass;
-
Use hand tools to remove weeds from school grounds, landscaped areas, athletic fields and dig ditches;
-
Sweep and blow asphalt areas;
-
Pick up refuse;
-
Load truck with debris and material;
-
Drive light trucks; Haul materials and distribute where needed;
-
Operate power-driven equipment such as small power mowers, edgers, sweepers, blowers, chain saws, jackhammers, dump trucks, skip loaders, sod cutters, brush chippers, and other equipment with a variety of attachments;
-
Assist in the installation, repair, and maintenance of sprinkler and irrigation systems;
-
Move and arrange bleachers, furniture, and equipment used for special events or for re-assignment;
-
Assist in the preparation, lining, marking, and dragging of athletic fields, tracks, or related areas;
-
Haul sand, dirt, sawdust, and straw and distribute where needed;
-
Perform other related work as may be required.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Basic work practices related to custodial work.

Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in grounds maintenance and general custodial work;

Operation and use of a variety of hand tools and power-driven equipment commonly used in grounds maintenance and custodial work;

EDUCATION
High School Diploma, General Education Degree (GED), or Certificate of Proficiency, and possession of the knowledge and abilities listed above.
REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES
-
Possession of and maintain a valid California Driver's License during the course of employment;
-
Have an acceptable driving record;
-
Must be insurable at standard rates by the District's insurance carrier and maintain such insurability during the course of employment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out the essential functions.
Physical Demands: Walk (continuously); bend, stoop, reach, push & pull (frequently); Must have an adequate range of motion in the upper extremities; operate equipment; lift, up to 25 pounds (frequently), and up to 50 pounds (infrequently); grasp and manipulate tools/ equipment (frequently); use seeing, hearing, and speaking.
Working Conditions: Work performed indoors or outdoors. Exposure to: electrically and mechanically operated equipment; cleaning agent odors; gas fumes; tool vibration; Exposure to hot, cold, wet, dry, or windy conditions caused by weather may occasionally be experienced.
