SUBSTITUTE VEHICLE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC
JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision by the Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor, to perform general mechanical work in
the overhaul and repair of school buses, automobiles, trucks, forklifts, mower tractors, and other vehicles;
to perform preventive maintenance on school buses and other District operated vehicles; and to perform
emergency school bus driver service.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Inspect and diagnose mechanical defects on a variety of gasoline and diesel powered buses,
trucks, automobiles, tractors, and other motorized equipment;
2. Perform bus safety inspections including brakes and tires;
3. Repair or make replacements as necessary;
4. Use a variety of hand tools, diagnostic equipment welding equipment, and a variety of mechanical
aids in the repair, adjustment, and maintenance of motorized equipment;
5. Repair broken or damaged bus windows and frames;
6. Repair seat covers and frames and secure floor mountings;
7. Inspect and replace wheel oil seals;
8. Change oil and filters and lubricate joints as necessary;
9. Service transmissions, batteries, emission systems, electrical systems, steering systems, differentials, power steering and universal joints;
10. Order parts and keep part inventory up to date;
11. Maintain a variety of files and records pertaining to motorized equipment repair, overhaul, and maintenance;
12. Steam clean engines and chassis;
13. Inspect and repair wheel bearings;
14. Record and log services performed and time on jobs;
15. Repair or replace other worn or broken parts which could lend to failure or costly repair if left unattended;
16. Advise Vehicle Maintenance Mechanic III of the need for any repairs or replacements;
17. Perform other related work as may be required.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIESKnowledge of:
1. Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of a variety of gasoline and diesel powered motorized vehicles and equipment;
2. Principles and theories of the internal combustion engine;
3. Operation and use of diagnostic and testing equipment;
4. Safe working methods and procedures;
5. Legal mandates, policies, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to the repair, overhaul, and maintenance of transportation and automotive equipment.
Ability to:
1. Perform needed skilled preventive maintenance inspections and repairs on all school buses and
District operated vehicles;
2. Diagnose the source of mechanical and electrical malfunctions;
3. Estimate time and materials;4. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common
fractions, and decimals;
5. Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, parts, and supply catalogs;
6. Write routine reports and correspondence;
7. Interpret mechanical and electrical schematics and diagrams;
8. Work with minimal supervision;
9. Maintain an established pace;
10. Perform repetitive tasks and complex tasks;
11. Respond appropriately to direction and changes;
12. Use a variety of hand and power tools used in the automotive trade correctly and safely;
13. Maintain simple records and prepare complete and concise reports;
14. Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
15. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education: High School Diploma, General Education Degree (GED), or Certificate of Proficiency and
possession of the knowledge and abilities listed above.Experience: Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in the preventive maintenance and
repair of school buses and other district-operated vehicles desired.REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES
1. Possession of and maintain a valid Class B California Driver's License during the course of
employment;
2. Have an acceptable driving record;
3. Must be insurable at standard rates by the District's insurance carrier and maintain such
insurability during the course of employment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position
classification must perform in carrying out the essential functions.
Physical Demands: Walk, stand, stoop, squat, kneel, bend, climb, reach (continuously); push, pull, and
twist (occasionally); lift up to 25 pounds alone, to 100 pounds with assistance (occasionally); grasp and
manipulate tools/equipment (continuously); use seeing, hearing and speaking.
Working Conditions: Most work is performed indoors, some outdoors. Exposure to: electrically and
mechanically operated equipment; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme heat
(Non-weather); vibration; outdoor weather conditions; loud noise (for example; bus engines) and possible
exposure to dust, wind, and sun.
