HEMET UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

SECONDARY DANCE TEACHER (6-12)

 JOB SUMMARY: 

Under the direction of the site administrator, teach and instruct students in grades 6–12 by planning, organizing, and delivering high-quality, engaging, and inspiring dance instruction. Collaborate with other visual and performing arts teachers to plan performances, support student recruitment, and promote arts programs. Deliver a standards-based dance curriculum and demonstrate proficiency in choreography and dance production across multiple dance styles. Assist with school programs and activities and perform other duties in accordance with the General Duties and Responsibilities Guidelines, as assigned. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

• Experience in multiple dance genres is desirable, including, but not limited to, lyrical, jazz, modern, tap, and Folklórico;

• Plans and implements a balanced dance program and organizes daily classes to ensure preparation, instruction, rehearsal, and performance activities are accomplished within the allotted time;

• Utilizes a varied repertoire of traditional and contemporary works that is appropriate for students' ages, abilities, and demonstrated skill levels;

• Evaluates student progress and provides ongoing assessment and feedback to support individual growth and high-quality performance;

• Selects and requisitions appropriate music, instructional materials, costumes, equipment, and other necessary resources to enhance student learning;

• Collaborates with District visual and performing arts teachers to plan and support District arts programs and events;

• Partners with site administrators and staff to provide multiple performance opportunities that allow students to showcase their learning and talents for peers, families, and the community;

• Implements high-quality instructional strategies that promote student engagement, creativity, artistic growth, and best practices in dance education;

• Establishes and maintains high expectations for student behavior to ensure a safe, orderly, and productive learning environment during classes, rehearsals, and performances;

• Aligns curriculum, instruction, and assessment with the California Arts Standards for Dance;

• Manages assigned budgets and resources responsibly and in accordance with District policies;

• Creates a safe and productive classroom culture that fosters student responsibility for self and equipment; 

• Positive relationships are evident, procedures are clear, and the classroom is safe and secure for learning; 

• Student and teacher interactions promote a growth mindset and student talents are cultivated;

• All students are welcome and receive an equitable learning opportunity; 

• Maintains an organized, clean environment;

• Participates in staff meetings and committees, as assigned;

• Actively participates in Professional Learning Communities to improve teaching and learning;

• Reflects on instruction and goal setting with assigned Coach/Mentor;

• Maintains professional competence through in-service training provided by the District and/or through self-selected professional development activities;

• Completes all District requests including but not limited to inventory, reporting, communicating with parents and staff, and completing contractual obligations.

KNOWLEDGE OF: 

• Principles, theories, methods, techniques, and strategies pertaining to teaching and instruction of secondary level pupils;

• Academic, social, and behavioral characteristics of secondary level pupils;

• Educational curriculum and instructional goals and objectives, and educational trends and research findings pertaining to comprehensive secondary programming;

• Behavior management and behavior shaping strategies, techniques and methods, and conflict resolution procedures;

• Socio-economic and cultural background differences of the school population. 

ABILITY TO: 

• Plan, organize, develop and conduct a comprehensive teaching and instruction program for pupils at the secondary level;

• Provide appropriate and effective learning experiences for pupils from a wide range of socio-economic levels and cultural backgrounds;

• Effectively assess the instructional and educational needs of pupils, and design, develop, and implement sound instructional and educational programs;

• Provide a motivating and stimulating learning environment;

• Perform research and development activities pertaining to curriculum and instructional programs and innovative and creative pilot projects designed to enhance pupil educational opportunities and experiences;

• Follow safety procedures and written and verbal instructions;

• Work effectively with staff, students and public;

• Make independent decisions;

• Work autonomously;

• Organize tasks, set priorities and meet deadlines, manage multiple tasks;

• Demonstrate good judgment and good problem-solving skills;

• Direct and instruct others;

• Respond appropriately to evaluation and changes in the work setting.

EDUCATION:  

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

 CREDENTIALS AND LICENSES: 

• Must possess or be able to obtain a Single Subject Dance credential OR California CTE credential in Arts Media and Entertainment;

• Must possess or be able to obtain an EL authorization. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS: 

The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position must perform in carrying out the essential functions of the position. 

Physical Demands: Walk, look downward, turn neck (up to continuously) sit, bend, (frequently); stand, stoop, squat, reach, push, pull, (Occasionally; kneel, crawl. Climb (infrequently); grasp/manipulate materials & supplies (continuously); lift items to 10 pounds (frequently), carry to 10 pounds (occasionally), lift/carry to 40 pounds (infrequently) (occasionally for PE and Industrial Arts teachers) use seeing, hearing and speaking (continuous, in class). 

Working Conditions: Indoor classrooms, exposure to: student noise and music, odors of food and science projects, possible communicable diseases or unruly students. Outdoor schoolyard and grounds, exposure to; temperatures, dust, pesticides and smoke (seasonally).
