DELEGATED BEHIND THE WHEEL TRAINER
JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision by the Director of Transportation or designee, to plan, coordinate, and
organize behind the wheel bus driver training, review and assess bus drivers to ensure that a high
standard of performance is maintained; to drive a school bus as needed; and to do other related work as
may be required.ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
● Perform and document on-the-road driving skills of bus drivers and operators of District
commercial and passenger motor vehicles in compliance with safety practices, departmental
policies, State and Federal Codes and Regulations.
● Perform designated, State approved behind-the-wheel duties under the review of a Certified
Driver Instructor.
● Prepare and maintain behind-the-wheel training, testing, and evaluation records; prepare reports
and documentation required by State and/or federal law.
● Conduct safe riding practices and bus evacuation training for students and staff at District schools
as assigned.
● Train drivers how to inspect wheelchairs and car/safety seats and safety positioning systems for
safe transportation of pupils; report unsafe conditions to appropriate personnel.
● Assist in the evaluation of bus stops and routing.
● May cover activity trips, special events, and/or regular runs from time-to-time as necessary;
● Operate two-way communication devices.
● Attend classes, safety meetings, and in-service trainings as assigned or as required for
maintenance of certificate and license.
● Perform related duties as assigned.EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
● Principles, concepts, and techniques of driving, inspecting, and managing passengers on
vehicles of the appropriate type and size.
● School bus transportation procedures and safe driving practices;
● The California Motor Vehicle Code and Title 13, applicable to the operation of motor vehicles in
the transportation of students and training of school bus drivers;
● The Instructor's Behind-the-Wheel Training Guide for California’s Bus Driver’s Training Course;
● Oversight and control of student passengers;
● Required safety devices on school buses;
● Safe driving practices and methods;
● Computer applications utilized by the transportation department, including but not limited to:
routing and scheduling software.Ability to:
● Provide quality behind-the-wheel training in vehicles of the appropriate type and size as defined
by the California Education Code;
● Operate a school bus safely and in conformance with applicable State laws;
● Maintain accurate records and be able to prepare complete and comprehensive reports;
● Train and motivate others toward proper driving and safety standards;
● Plan, develop and implement bus driver training and safety programs;
● Work independently;
● Organize tasks, set priorities, and meet deadlines;
● Perform simple and complex repetitive tasks;
● Manage multiple tasks;
● Respond appropriately to direction and changes in the work setting;
● Organize and effectively present classroom training to students at all grade levels;
● Speak before groups and conduct effective conferences involving parents, students, teachers,
and drivers;
● Communicate effectively in oral and written form;
● Understand and follow oral and written directions;
● Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.;
● Access and use District-adopted web-based systems.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and possession of the knowledge and abilities
listed below.Experience:
Three (3) years of successful experience in the operation of a school bus.REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES

The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position
classification must perform in carrying out the essential job functions.
Physical Demands: Push, pull and otherwise move objects, bending at the waist, kneel, or crouch to
inspect buses (up to continuously); lift/carry up to 50 pounds, including equipment and small children
(occasionally); manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle and work with various
materials and objects; sitting (continuously); stand, walk, bend, stoop, look up/down (occasionally); use
vision, hearing and speaking; repetitive hand activities within close reach. A physical examination may be
required prior to employment in this class.
Working Conditions: Exposure to moderate noise and vibration (i.e. school buses); fumes and/or
airborne particles, toxic and caustic chemicals and outdoor weather conditions; operate a large passenger bus for prolonged periods of time requiring constant attention to traffic and road conditions while maintaining appropriate student passenger behavior.In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Hemet Unified School District (HUSD)
