Position Title:  Head Custodian II

Department : Maintenance & Operations 

Site Placement: Acacia Middle School (Placement can change based on Department needs)

Work Year: 12 months

Hours/Days: 8 hours per day, 5 days per week

Daily Schedule: Monday - Friday (6:00 am - 2:30 p.m.)

Job Description

HEAD CUSTODIAN II 

 

JOB SUMMARY 

Positions in this class have primary responsibility for planning and directing the day-to-day maintenance of the secondary level school, which includes custodial, grounds keeping, and general maintenance activities. The Head Custodian II reports directly to the Assistant Director of Maintenance & Operations or designee. Incumbents review the work of subordinates and evaluate the extent of maintenance problems to determine if repairs can be handled by the school site personnel or whether to arrange for a skilled maintenance worker from the District office.  

 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Assign, coordinate, supervise, and participate as necessary in the custodial, grounds keeping, and general maintenance work performed by personnel engaged in custodial and grounds activities;

  2. Schedule daily work and handle conflicting priorities;

  3. Inspect school buildings and grounds to insure proper safety and housekeeping standards are maintained;

  4. Confer with supervisor regarding operations and maintenance problems of school buildings, facilities and grounds;

  5. Instruct assigned custodians in the performance of their duties;

  6. Open school buildings, and inspect buildings and grounds for health and safety hazards or vandalism;

  7. Answer emergency calls;

  8. Check heating, electrical and plumbing equipment facilities;

  9. Request District skilled maintenance workers, when necessary, to perform larger or more specialized repairs;

  10. Supervise and assist in moving and arranging furniture and equipment, and setting up buildings and rooms for meetings or special events;

  11. Supervise and participate in the thorough cleaning and restoration of school plant during school recesses;

  12. Plan and carry out a preventive maintenance program for the school buildings and grounds;

  13. Coordinate use of school facilities with teachers and citizen groups;

  14. Requisition needed materials, supplies and equipment;

  15. Set up public address equipment;

  16. Keep records and submit required reports;

  17. Perform all duties listed for the Custodian I or II Classes;

  18. Check-in and dispense custodial and general classroom supplies, and maintain school equipment and supply storage room;

  19. Participate in screening for new personnel;

  20. Operate copy machine;

  21. Perform other related duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  1. Methods, materials, equipment used in custodial and building maintenance work; 

  2. District standards and requirements for the custodial maintenance of District schools; 

  3. Basic arithmetic; 

  4. Safe work practices and procedures.

 

Ability to:

  1. Plan work assignments and direct the work of others; 

  2. Train and instruct assigned personnel in the performance of their duties; 

  3. Accept a variety of special duties and perform them without close supervision; 

  4. Perform minor repairs independently; 

  5. Keep records and prepare reports;

  6. Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure   manuals;

  7. Write routine reports and correspondence;

  8. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; 

  9. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions; 

  10. Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with those contacted in the course of work;

  11. Follow work & safety procedures, written & verbal instructions, and schedules;

  12. Respond appropriately to direction and changes in work setting;

  13. Organize tasks, set priorities, maintain established pace;

  14. Work with minimal supervision;

  15. Perform repetitive tasks;

  16. Manage multiple tasks;

  17. Demonstrate good problem-solving skills;

  18. Access and use District-adopted web-based systems.

 

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

Education: High School diploma or general education degree (GED) and possession of the knowledge and abilities listed above.

Experience:

  1. Four (4) years of responsible experience in the custodial or building maintenance trades, including some experience in a supervisory capacity;

  2. One (1) year of experience at or equivalent to the level of Head Custodian I with the Hemet Unified School District;

  3. Or Two (2) years of experience at or equivalent to the level of Custodian II with the Hemet Unified School District.

REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES

  1. If driving a vehicle is required in the performance of duties, operator must possess a valid California Driver's License;

  2. Have an acceptable driving record, an maintain possession of such valid license; 

  3. Must be insurable at standard rates by District's insurance carrier;

  4. As long as driving is required for a position operator must maintain such insurability.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS 

Physical Demands: Walk (continuously); bend, stoop, reach, push & pull (frequently), to access areas and to operate equipment; lift, up to 25 pounds (frequently), and up to 50 pounds (infrequently); grasp and manipulate tools/ equipment (frequently); use seeing, hearing and speaking.

Working Conditions: Most work performed indoors, some outdoors.  Exposure to: electrically and mechanically operated equipment; cleaning agent odors; floor buffer vibration; seasonal outdoor temperatures (30o -120o) and possible exposure to dust, wind, sun and insects.  Night custodian may work alone.  Subject to call back from off duty in case of emergencies.
