Position Information:
Position Title: Head Custodian I
Department : Maintenance & Operations
Site Placement: Pleasant Valley Elementary School (Placement can change based on Department needs)
Work Year: 12 months
Hours/Days: 8 hours per day, 5 days per week
Daily Schedule: Monday - Friday (6:00 am - 2:30 p.m.)
This position is anticipated to start on July 1, 2026

HEAD CUSTODIAN I
JOB SUMMARY
Positions in this class are assigned to a school site as a special need dictates and report to the Assistant Director of Maintenance & Operations or designee; under general supervision and responsible for directing and supervising the work of assigned custodians, and for the overall cleaning of buildings and adjacent areas to insure proper cleanliness, safety and appearance.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Confer with principal or designees concerning matters relating to the care and cleaning of the school or other district facility;
-
Under direction plan, organize and direct the work of personnel engaged in custodial activities;
-
Assign work schedules and assure that they are met;
-
Participate in cleaning and maintenance activities and in serving needs of instructional and administrative personnel during periods while on duty;
-
Open school or site facilities;
-
Inspect buildings and grounds for health and safety hazards or vandalism;
-
Check various items of heating, electrical and plumbing equipment and facilities and make emergency non-technical repairs or request assistance from appropriate department;

Requisition, check in and dispense custodial supplies and maintain supply room;
-
Assign duties in connection with special activities and events held at the school or facility and arrange for proper equipment, heating, ventilation and lighting;

Keep records and submit required reports;
-
Perform duties listed for Custodian I and II Classifications;
-
Supervise and participate in the thorough cleaning, repair, and renovation of school plant during summer and other recess periods;
-
Attend head custodian and other meetings;
-
Perform other related duties as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Knowledge of:

Methods, materials, equipment used in custodial and building maintenance work;

District standards and requirements for the custodial maintenance of district schools;

Basic arithmetic;

Safe work practices and procedures.

Train and instruct assigned personnel in the performance of their duties;

Accept a variety of special duties and perform them without close supervision;

Perform minor non-technical reports independently;

Keep records and prepare reports;

Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals;

Write routine reports and correspondence;

Add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s;

Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with those contacted in the course of work;

Follow work & safety procedures, written & verbal instructions, and schedules;

Respond appropriately to direction and changes in work setting;

Organize tasks, set priorities, maintain established pace;

Work with minimal supervision;

Perform repetitive tasks;

Manage multiple tasks;

Demonstrate good problem-solving skills;

Access and use District-adopted web-based systems.
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
Education: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and possession of the knowledge and abilities listed above.
Experience:
-
Three (3) years of responsible experience in the custodial or building maintenance trades, including some experience in a supervisory capacity;
-
Or one (1) year of experience at or equivalent to the level of Custodian I with the Hemet Unified School District.
REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES
-
If driving a vehicle is required in the performance of duties, operator must possess a valid California Driver's License;
-
Have an acceptable driving record and maintain possession of such valid license;
-
Must be insurable at standard rates by District's insurance carrier and maintain such insurability during the course of employment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical Demands: Walk (continuously); bend, stoop, reach, push & pull (frequently) to access areas and to operate equipment; lift, up to 25 pounds (frequently), and up to 50 pounds (infrequently); grasp and manipulate tools/ equipment (frequently); use seeing, hearing and speaking.
Working Conditions: Most work performed indoors, some outdoors. Exposure to: electrically and mechanically operated equipment; cleaning agent odors; floor buffer vibration; seasonal outdoor temperatures (30o -120o) and possible exposure to dust, wind, sun and insects. Night custodian may work alone. Subject to call back from off duty in case of emergencies.
