Job Description

DISTRICT BASED PRESCHOOL TEACHER

 

JOB SUMMARY 

Under the direction of the Preschool Principal, the District Based Preschool Teacher plays an integral role in collaborating with Preschool staff and district leaders to understand systemic problems that impact the ability to understand and meet student and caregiver needs. 

The goal of the District Based Preschool Teacher is to build teacher capacity and their understanding of early childhood instructional best practices to positively impact student outcomes.  The focus is on continuous improvement in classrooms; utilization of data to integrate short cycles of improvement to meet the overall goal(s); and establishing effective rapport with teachers, students, and administrators. Works collaboratively with the HUSD Preschool leadership team and the district to ensure alignment of the district’s vision, mission, and values. Promote reflection, provide guidance and structure where needed, and focus on strengths, collaboration, and common issues of concern.  Supports high-quality instruction in classrooms through modeling, co-planning, team teaching, and may provide feedback to teachers with a specific focus on the use of improvement science methodologies. This is not a supervisory position and does not include evaluation of colleagues.  

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Coordinates and/or provides training and coaching to the State Preschool and Head Start instructional staff in instructional best practices;

  2. Supports the instructional development of all teachers in understanding improvement science practices supported with preschool learning foundations, preschool adopted curriculum, assessments, instructional frameworks, goals, PDSA cycles, student data driving instruction, purpose statements, and the continuous improvement rubric;

  3. Coordinates and/or provides training to Preschool families in accordance with the training plan;  

  4. Support curriculum development and coordination for curriculum implementation in accordance with the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework and the Preschool Learning Foundations;

  5. Develops,  guides, and creates other support material as necessary;

  6. Design and deliver professional development for the preschool program based on data and site/district goals; 

  7. Provide instruction to students as needed;

  8. Supports the Preschool team as a valuable member;  

  9. Demonstrates initiative and an ability to follow through on projects;

  10. Provides resources and assistance for all staff regarding instructional best practices and continuous improvement strategies;

  11. Supports teachers and administrators in using data to improve instruction on all levels;

  12. Available for coaching cycles (i.e. informal observations which are non-evaluative, co-planning, team teaching, and modeling lessons) for the purpose of enriching and enhancing a teacher’s professional growth and student success;

  13. Utilizes adult learning theory to motivate adult learners to improve professional practice.

  14. Exhibits strong early childhood pedagogical knowledge, including differentiation strategies to meet the needs of all learners;

  15. Exhibits strong improvement science knowledge;

  16. Demonstrates expertise in oral and written communication;

  17. Models continual improvement, demonstrates lifelong learning, and applies new learning to help all students achieve;

  18. Assists teachers with instructional planning to achieve curriculum objectives and establish a positive classroom environment;

  19. May provide relevant information from research and professional literature on best practices in instruction;

  20. Collaborates with Preschool Administration, Directors and Coordinators in Educational Services in the evaluation of program effectiveness through data collection and data analysis;

  21. Collaborate with teacher teams to investigate the ways in which the design of the system produces the current outcomes and support instructional decision-making aligned with preschool learning foundations and research-based strategies;

  22. Communicate learnings with relevant Program-based staff to ensure transparency, development of trust, and communication;

  23. Attend meetings, trainings, and professional learning as directed by the Preschool Principal, or designee;

  24. Adheres to the standards and policies of CSPP, Head Start, and District;

  25. Perform other duties as assigned by administrators.

  13. Demonstrate knowledge of correct English grammar and usage;

  14. Be a systems thinker and problem solver;

  15. Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions;

  16. Use effective interpersonal skills including professionalism, tact, patience, and courtesy;

  17. Develop and deliver engaging professional development;

  18. Travel district-wide to support all preschool sites;

  19. Willingness to continue to seek professional development.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Development, Human Development, Psychology, or a related field. A minimum of six (6) semester units in Infant/Toddler Development is highly desirable. 

Experience: Five years of classroom teaching experience. Evidence of experience in assisting and enhancing the professional growth of colleagues. Experience as a resource, mentor, or lead teacher. Willingness to continue to seek professional development.

REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES

  1. Possess Child Development Teacher Permit or higher;

  2. Possess a Pediatric First Aid and CPR certificate or obtain within 90 days of employment;

  3. Proof of immunizations for Pertussis (DTaP), Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR), and Influenza;

  4. Possession of and maintain a valid California Driver's License during the course of employment;

  5. Have an acceptable driving record;  

  6. Must be insurable at standard rates by District's insurance carrier and maintain such insurability during the course of employment; 

  7. Attend CLASS Observation Training and pass a yearly reliability test.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS 

The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position must perform in carrying out the essential functions of the position.

Physical Demands: Walk, look downward, turn neck (up to continuously) sit, bend (frequently); stand, stoop, squat, reach, push, pull, (occasionally; kneel, crawl. Climb (infrequently); grasp/manipulate materials & supplies (continuously); lift items to 10 pounds (frequently), carry to 10 pounds (occasionally), lift/carry to 40 pounds (infrequently); use vision, hearing and speaking (continuous).

Working Conditions:  Indoor classrooms and workspaces, exposure to: office equipment noises, driving, temperature changes, dust, pesticides, and smoke (seasonally), outside areas on school/district campuses.  Frequent travel from site to site within the district.
