ELEMENTARY ARTS INTEGRATION WHEEL ITINERANT TEACHER

Job Description:
Under the direction of the Director of Elementary Education, VAPA Coordinator, and site principals, the Elementary Arts Integration Wheel Itinerant Teacher plans and delivers arts-integrated lessons to all students at the elementary and TK-8 schools. A team of Arts Integration Wheel Itinerant Teachers will travel to a set of elementary sites each quarter to provide full or part-day (as designed by administration) release time for grade-level teachers while providing the students in the classroom exposure to various forms of arts instruction. In collaboration with the VAPA Coordinator, general education teachers, and the other Arts Integration Itinerant Wheel Teachers, lesson plans for each grade level will be developed in the areas of dance, media arts, theatre, and various types of visual arts including photography, craft arts, computer coding, and graphic design. Expertise in one of these areas with a willingness to expand skills is a plus.

Travel, using a personal vehicle, to different school sites will be required; strong organization skills are essential. This position is available for up to five years or until funding from the 2022 California Proposition 28 expires. Qualified applicants may re-apply for this position after being in this position for 5 years.

Examples of Duties:

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

Instruction:

  • Teach and instruct pupils in arts-related subjects including dance, media arts, theatre, and various types of visual arts including photography, craft arts, computer coding, and graphic design;
  • Prepare and teach engaging, differentiated, age-appropriate, grade-specific arts lessons with a clear and concise purpose;
  • Collaborate with academic teachers to integrate arts with the Common Core State Standards and California Arts Standards throughout the school’s curriculum and culture;
  • Utilize an adopted course of study, program guides, and a variety of other materials in developing lesson planning, and in the development of teaching outlines;
  • Guide student behavior and class management to maintain an optimal learning environment;
  • Teach and instruct pupils in citizenship and other subject matter specified by legal mandates, District policies, and regulations;
  • Prepare, develop, and utilize a variety of instructional materials appropriate for the instructional level of pupils within a wide range of mental, physical, and emotional maturity;
  • Establish and maintain appropriate standards of student behavior, utilizing a variety of behavior management strategies and techniques, including behavior modification, reinforcement, and other positive behavior-shaping processes;
  • Establish and maintain a suitable room environment;
  • Perform non-instructional duties, including curriculum and instruction development, student supervision, and advisory and consultation activities;
  • Conduct a variety of learning experiences to effectively utilize the time available for instruction;
  • Adherence to the California Standards for the Teaching Profession;
  • Perform other duties as

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

Knowledge Of:

  • Principles, theories, methods, techniques, and strategies pertaining to teaching and instruction of elementary grade pupils;
  • Child growth and development and behavior characteristics of the elementary grade child;
  • Educational curriculum and instructional goals and objectives, and the educational trends and research findings pertaining to early childhood educational programming;
  • The California Standards for the Teaching Profession;
  • Behavior management and behavior shaping strategies, techniques, and methods, and conflict resolution procedures;
  • Socio-economic and cultural background differences of the general school population

EDUCATION:
Possession of a Baccalaureate or higher degree with an emphasis in elementary education, instructional technology, a subject matter field within the visual and performing arts, or closely related field areas.

 

CREDENTIAL:

Hold/be able to hold a California Multiple Subject Teaching credential with an English Learner Authorization.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position must perform in carrying out the essential functions of the position.

Physical Demands: Sit, stand, reach, look down, turn neck (frequently); walk, bend, stoop, squat, push, pull, climb stairs, reach above shoulders (occasionally); kneel, crawl, lay down, use foot controls (infrequently); lift/carry items to 10 pounds (frequently), to 25 pounds (occasionally) and 26 – 90 pounds (students, in emergencies); grasp/manipulate materials and supplies (frequently); use seeing, hearing and speaking (continuously).

Working Conditions: Indoor classrooms, outdoor school yard and grounds. Exposure to: student and playground noise, communicable diseases, unruly students, air conditioning, seasonal temperatures, dust, wind, pesticides and possible smog.
