On a grown path to serving more than 5,000 students in the coming years, CWC LA operates five charters:

CWC LAhas a Regional Support Office (RSO) that supports all CWC LA schools. We work with our network partners at Citizens of the World Charter Schools (CWCS), linking the schools in Los Angeles to CWC schools in other parts of the country.

Job Overview and Summary

CWC LA is seeking a dedicated School Custodian. The school custodian plays a crucial role in maintaining a clean, safe, and hygienic environment for students, staff, and visitors within the school premises and entrances. Responsible for performing a variety of cleaning and maintenance tasks, the custodian ensures that all areas of the school, including classrooms, hallways, restrooms, exterior and common areas, meet established cleanliness and safety standards. This position requires attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. The custodian must also prioritize tasks efficiently, respond promptly to maintenance requests, and adhere to established safety protocols and procedures. The School Custodian will be part of the School Operations Team and will be managed by the School Operations Manager. 

 

Key Responsibilities

The Custodian job responsibilities include:

  • Perform routine cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and disinfecting surfaces in classrooms, hallways, restrooms, offices, and other areas of the school, including lawns, sidewalks, and parking lots

  • Empty trash receptacles and recycling bins throughout the school, ensuring proper disposal of waste materials and adherence to recycling guidelines. Ensure that the school grounds and surrounding area is free from litter and debris

  • Clean and sanitize restroom facilities, including toilets, sinks, mirrors, and floors, to maintain a clean and hygienic environment for students, staff, and visitors. Respond promptly to emergency clean up requests

  • Strip, wax, and polish floors as needed to maintain a clean and attractive appearance, and operate floor scrubbing and carpet cleaning equipment as necessary

  • Assist with minor maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, replacing filters, unclogging drains, and repairing fixtures to ensure the proper functioning of school facilities

  • Monitor the premises for safety hazards, such as spills or debris, and promptly address them to prevent accidents or injuries. Report any maintenance issues or security concerns to the appropriate personnel

  • Keep track of cleaning supplies and equipment inventory, and notify Operations Manager when supplies need to be replenished or equipment requires maintenance or replacement

  • Provide additional cleaning and setup assistance during special events, meetings, or activities held at the school, as directed by school administrators or event organizers

  • Adhere to school policies and procedures related to cleaning, safety, and security, as well as applicable health and safety regulations and guidelines

  • Deliver supplies and materials to appropriate areas of the building

  • Special projects as directed by the School Operations Manager

Ability to effectively clean and sanitize various surfaces, including floors, walls, windows, and restrooms, using appropriate cleaning agents and equipment.

Basic knowledge of maintenance tasks such as repairing plumbing leaks, replacing light bulbs, fixing minor electrical issues, and performing routine maintenance on cleaning equipment.

Understanding and adhering to safety protocols and procedures to prevent accidents and injuries, including proper handling of cleaning chemicals and equipment.

Time Management and Attention to Detail

Prioritizing tasks efficiently to ensure that cleaning and maintenance duties are completed within scheduled time frames, especially in a busy school environment. Ability to prioritize tasks based on urgency and importance.

Being meticulous in cleaning and inspecting areas for cleanliness, ensuring that all spaces are well-maintained and safe for students, staff, and visitors.

Problem-Solving and Adapatability

Being able to adapt to changing priorities and unexpected situations, such as spills or emergencies, while maintaining a professional and efficient approach to work.

Requirements and Qualifications 

The ideal candidate will have:

Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in janitorial or custodial work is preferred, especially in a school or similar institutional setting

  • Strong attention to detail and thoroughness in cleaning and maintaining school facilities to high standards of cleanliness and sanitation

  • Knowledge of safety protocols and procedures to prevent accidents and injuries while performing cleaning and maintenance tasks

  • Knowledgeable in the use of consumable cleaning supplies and protective agents  

 

Qualities

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Good communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with staff, students, and vendors

  • Ability to prioritize tasks

  • Dependable and punctual, with a consistent attendance record and the ability to work independently or as part of a team

  • Willingness to adapt to changing priorities and work schedules, including occasional evening or weekend hours for special events or cleaning projects

 

Physical Requirements 

  • Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing effectively 

  • Ability work in various weather conditions

  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects, equipment, or materials (e.g., up to 50 pounds or more) as required for tasks such as moving furniture, equipment, or supplies

  • Capacity to stand and walk for extended periods

  • Capability to bend, stoop, kneel, or crouch frequently to access and work in different areas of the school, classrooms, and offices

  • Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to operate equipment

  • Ability to climb ladders, stairs, or other structures safely to access elevated areas 

  • Endurance and physical stamina to perform tasks that may be physically demanding 

  • Adequate vision and hearing to perceive and respond to potential safety hazards and communicate effectively with colleagues and supervisors

  • Overall good health and fitness level to meet the demands of the job and withstand the physical rigors of the work
