TEACHER ON SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT (TOSA) - MATH/SCIENCE

Founded in 2000, Camino Nuevo Charter Academy students represent the neighborhood of MacArthur Park west of downtown Los Angeles, a community that is one of the most under-resourced and densely populated neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Currently, CNCA has six campuses that serve approximately 3,500 students from TK through 12th grade.

The Opportunity

Under the supervision of the site Principal, the Math TOSA supports 9-12 teachers and student learning through professional development in the area of math instruction. Coordination of support includes a variety of activities including peer coaching and professional development facilitated by CNCA staff.  The Math TOSA must believe that math is best learned in a student-centered classroom and that all students are capable of being mathematical thinkers, problem-solvers, and communicators. The Math TOSA will be a visionary, eager to be in the forefront of educational practices, and must embrace the challenge of demonstrating that public education in a low-income, primarily immigrant, multilingual area can succeed. 

 

Essential Functions

       Instructional Leadership

  • Works directly with administration, site staff, and the HSO Content Team in the development, implementation, and evaluation of math planning and instructional practices using CNCA’s Math Framework and math curricula.

  • Consults with site administration and the Director of Mathematics around areas of strength and growth in the school’s math instruction

  • Organizes, develops, and provides trainings for staff related to Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and CNCA’s math curricula, including grade-level/department PLC, weekly site professional development, and quarterly cross-site professional development

  • Participates in network collaboration to research and build expertise on 9-12 math instruction

  • Regularly analyzes student achievement data to determine the effectiveness of math instruction for all students and key subgroups; adjusts coaching plans to respond to data

  • Maintains regular, punctual attendance 

  • Other duties as assigned

 

       Coaching

  • Build relationships with teachers for the purpose of establishing an environment of trust and collaboration 

  • Coach 9th-12th teachers on the implementation of Common Core State Standards in Mathematics and CNCA math curricula, including frequent observation and feedback, co-teaching and/or co-planning

  • Support teachers to monitor instruction, including developing plans for analyzing and responding to student data

  • Maintain records for observations and coaching, including but not limited to, coaching logs, observation calendars, check in agendas and notes, etc.

  • Support teachers to administer and analyze aligned mathematics assessments

  • Model and support high-quality interactions with students and families, including effective parent communication and classroom management

  • Support teachers in reflection and professional goal setting
