TEACHER ON SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT (TOSA) - LITERACY

Founded in 2000, Camino Nuevo Charter Academy students represent the neighborhood of MacArthur Park west of downtown Los Angeles, a community that is one of the most under-resourced and densely populated neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Currently, CNCA has six campuses that serve approximately 3,500 students from TK through 12th grade.

The Opportunity

 

Under the supervision of the site Principal, the Literacy TOSA supports K-2 teachers and student learning through professional development in the area of literacy instruction, including biliteracy (Spanish-English) and foundational skills instruction. Coordination of support includes a variety of activities including peer coaching, professional development facilitated by external partners, and professional development facilitated by CNCA staff.  The Literacy TOSA must be a visionary, eager to be in the forefront of educational practices, and must embrace the challenge of demonstrating that public education in a low-income, primarily immigrant, multilingual area can succeed. 

 

Essential Functions

Instructional Leadership

  • Works directly with administration, site staff, and the HSO Content Team in the development, implementation, and evaluation of K-2 literacy and biliteracy planning and instructional practices using CNCA’s literacy curriculum

  • Consult with site administration and the Director of Biliteracy and English Learners around areas of strength and growth in the school and network’s foundational skills instruction for K-2

  • Organizes, develops, and provides trainings for staff related to literacy and biliteracy planning, instruction, and assessment, including grade-level PLC, weekly site professional development, and quarterly cross-site professional development

  • Participates in network collaboration to research and build expertise on K-2 foundational skills instruction

  • Regularly analyzes student achievement data to determine the effectiveness of literacy instruction for all students and key subgroups; adjusts coaching plans to respond to data

  • Maintains regular, punctual attendance 

  • Other duties as assigned

Coaching

  • Coach TK-2 teachers on the implementation of foundational literacy skills, including frequent observation and feedback, co-teaching and/or co-planning

  • Support teachers to monitor instruction, including developing plans for analyzing and responding to student data

  • Model and support high-quality interactions with students and families, including effective parent communication and classroom management

  • Support TK-2 teachers in reflection and professional goal setting
