Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor Degree required; master degree or higher preferred

  • Valid California Teaching or Administrative Services Credential or equivalent

  • Proven success as a teacher and leader as evidenced by multiple proof points

  • At least 5 years in urban education 

  • Expertise in TK-2 Literacy and Dual Language pedagogy

  • Ability to demonstrate leadership and project management skills

  • Ability to work with students and staff to motivate positively

 TK-2 Literacy Specialist

 

The Organization

Camino Nuevo Charter Academy (CNCA) is a network of charter schools serving students across the PK-Post Secondary continuum in the Greater MacArthur Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.  Pueblo Nuevo Education Development Group (PNEDG) is CNCA’s resource development and capacity building arm.   PNEDG invests in young people to foster personal transformation and generational social change.  PNEDG staff support and build capacity for CNCA schools in achieving their vision.  The organizations are grounded in the beliefs that public education is a civil right and all students deserve an excellent education that will prepare them for success in life. At CNCA/PNEDG, we recognize that lower income and immigrant communities often face institutional and cultural barriers that create impediments to students’ success, and that an excellent education must eliminate these barriers. We integrate a strong focus on progressive, research-based academics with a holistic, place-based approach to serving our students. Since opening its doors in 2001, CNCA has grown to six schools and nearly 3,500 students.  Our goal is that by CNCA graduates will be equipped with the skills, knowledge, and worldview necessary to be literate, critical thinkers and independent problem solvers.

The Opportunity

 

The TK-2 Literacy Specialist, in collaboration with the Content Team, supports the implementation of an equitable, research-based, innovative Literacy program to ensure success in CNCA’s mission.  The TK-2 Literacy Specialist works collaboratively with the Content Team and CNCA school leaders to support the overall development and implementation of a coherent horizontally and vertically aligned TK-2 Literacy program in a dual language (Spanish-English) setting. The TK-2 Literacy Specialist maintains knowledge of current research, best practices and trends on a national and state level to support the direction and guidance of the Content Team. Ultimately, the TK-2 Literacy Specialist works strategically at a systems level to implement structures and strategies to close the opportunity and achievement gap.

 

Responsibilities:

 

Strategy and Vision Setting Responsibilities

  • Serve as a member of the Content Team, contributing expertise in TK-2 Literacy and dual language pedagogy to inform the overall vision and strategy of the Content Team and the academic program

  • Continuously collect research on instructional best practices in order to support the development and execution of a cohesive strategic plan for Early Literacy across CNCA schools

  • Monitor the effectiveness of the TK-2 Literacy program through the use of key metrics (e.g., analysis of formative student achievement data and observational teacher data)

  • In consultation with school leaders and the Director of Biliteracy and English Learners, support the development of a comprehensive TK-2 Literacy professional development plan for teachers and other CNCA stakeholders

  • Provide direct coaching and support to TK-2 Literacy coaches and teachers as needed

  • Elevate challenges that arise within Early Literacy and work with the Director of Biliteracy and English Learners to inform and improve work 

  • Understand and navigate the political, social, economic, legal, and cultural context facing urban charter schools and the students they serve

 

Compliance and Management Responsibilities 

  • Collaborate with the Director of Biliteracy and English Learners to ensure that all TK-2 Literacy functions and projects are effectively carried out and meet high expectations

  • Contribute to preparation and presentation of regular status reports related to TK-2 Literacyfor meetings as needed

  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing 

  • Other duties as assigned
